6 Steps To Hiring The Best Mover

A good mover can take the stress out of getting you from one home to the next.

Now that you have found the right home or finally was able to come to a meeting of the minds with the buyer's agent and your home is under contract now. Next question many ask their agent is, "do you know a good mover?"

Most agents will ask around or scramble for a card they received from 1 or 2 but as a consumer you have to do your due diligence as well, do not put that responsibility on your agent too.

• Ask for referrals from family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers who have recently moved and had a great experience.
• Go Online. After you have a few names see if the company is a part of www.moving.org and check to see if the company is a member. Membership is voluntary but it foes require companies to abide by the organization's operating guidelines. Get each company's USDOT number and check if they are licensed and insured on the website www.fmcsa.dot.gov. Visit review sites and social media, but keep in mind that the comments are from people you do not know and some may not be from actual customers.
• Get in-home estimate. Show them everything you are taking so they can accurately have the total weight. Do not forget things you want them to pack, so they can estimate packing charges. Moving out of state? Get a written binding estimate or a binding not-to-exceed estimate. These put a limit on what you will ultimately be charged.
• Check over the estimate detail. Ask the company's representative to clarify anything you may not understand. Have them put any changes in writing. Ask if there are any other charges you could possibly incur.
• Ask do they have military discounts or everyday hero discounts or incentives.
• Confirm final details. Hire the company you are comfortable with even if it's not the lowest. A low priced mover could cost you more in damages they inflict on your belongings and premises in the long run.
