This crisis changed lives all over the world. Still, my family and I are thankful for what has stayed the same. I'm sure most of you agree. This June, we can celebrate our children's hard work at graduation. Most children will not have graduation parties and many will not walk across the stage. The important thing is that they put in the work. Despite all the upheaval, it will still be the highlight of many parents year, if not life. This is always a difficult time for parents, even without the global pandemic. Graduation is bittersweet for parents because it is a sign that part of my job is over. I remember wondering what I would do with all this free time. As most parents will tell you, the job is never done. And I wouldn’t have it any other way!

My youngest son and I shortly after his graduation. Love you Christian!

This year, we are on a mission to raise $10,000 for SEARCH Homeless Services! SEARCH is a leading non-profit in the Houston area. They depend on sponsorships and donations to continue its leading-edge service. We donate a part of our income from real estate sales to SEARCH because everyone deserves a place to call home!

SEARCH has become Houston's leading agency in helping people get jobs and stable housing. Their services let people break free from the cycle of poverty and homelessness. SEARCH’s efforts in light of COVID-19 have had to increase. SEARCH is updating protocols at their facilities which include apartment sites scattered throughout the Houston area, at their House of Tiny Treasures preschool, and at their main building. They are also increasing their fieldwork to serve individuals on the street who are most at risk.

In keeping with our mission, we collected supplies for SEARCH from their In-Kind Donations list. This May we delivered our first batch to the SEARCH offices in downtown Houston. Thanks to my office staff for donating to those in need, and for their work in helping us achieve our mission.

For most people, the immediate risk of becoming ill from the virus that causes COVID-19 is low. But, older adults and people of any age with underlying health conditions, including diabetes, lung disease, or heart disease, are at greater risk of severe illness from COVID-19.

Ways to Keep Others Safe:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after touching your face, going to the bathroom, and before eating or preparing food.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands
  • Stay home when possible
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.

You can help stop COVID-19 by knowing the signs and symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath

Be sure to seek medical advice if you develop symptoms and wear a mask if you leave your home.

If you do develop symptoms, call ahead before you go to a doctor’s office or emergency room. Tell them about your recent travel and your symptoms.

I hope you and your family are well and this month brings you safety and happiness.
