The East End, the area just east of downtown Houston, has seen a historic shift in land use, particularly in areas west of Lockwood. There are 400 acres of vacant land in Second Ward.

The area has been attracting more residents, a trend expected to accelerate when the light-rail line there is completed next spring. Yet the area lacks many retail options, office space and multifamily developments.

The Greater East End Improvement District included the following graphic in a presentation about the changes ahead for the area long poised for revitalization and development.

Purple areas are industrial, which are largely being sold; the tan areas are “undeveloped.”
