Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Buy

Anything worth doing takes some effort, and it’s no secret that buying a home can also be incredibly stressful. Since a home will likely be the most expensive thing you’ll ever buy, it’s important that you are prepared. One of the best ways to do this is by asking yourself some important questions…Most of which will require you to take a hard look at the big picture.

What are your goals for the next 5-10 years? How about the next 20?

You don’t have to have the answer to this question right now, but this is something very important to consider. You will not have enough equity in your home to move in the next year or two, so it’s best to think long-term. You won’t want to make a decision that will make your life harder in the future.   For example, if you’re intent on raising two kids and getting a large dog, you’ll probably want a home with at least three bedrooms and a sizable backyard. You’ll also want to make sure you live near good schools, and it might be nice to have a local park close by. Since you will be in the Greater Houston Area, what about a local pool? Is a neighborhood pool necessary or does a county or city pool work for your needs?

Are there any older relatives who I/we might need to take in?

Multi-generational living is certainly a trend we have seen an increase since 2020. There are homes designed to specialize in these needs. There are also older homes that may suit the needs of a multi-generational home. You will want to consider the amount of space you will need, the number of floors your home should have, and even if 2 master bedrooms will be required.

How important are things like a large backyard and a 3-car garage?

If you need a one-story home, chances are your backyard may be smaller. Lots are typically a similar size for all homes in a block. One-story homes are going to take up more space on the land than two-story homes. If you are faced with this decision, which is more important to you? Consider creating a list of “must-have” features for your home. Follow that up with a longer list of “nice to haves” This will help you to decide if you have to choose between features.

Hopefully, these questions have gotten you thinking about your home-buying needs and wants. Of course, your priorities can (and probably will) change over time. The key is to find a home that will be able to grow with you, whether you’re planning to be there for the next 10 years or the next 50.
